A mature and structured sector
The Optics sector includes the manufacture of eyeglasses and optical equipment, as well as the retailing of optical products. In June 2021, there were nearly 12,340 active companies operating 16,716 establishments. The optical retail trade represents 96% of the participants for 80% of the salaried employees and 74.5% of the 7.9 billion euros of cumulated turnover of the sector.
Combined impact of the Covid-19 crisis and 100% Health
The year 2020 had begun for the optical sector with the entry into force on January 1 of the "100% health" reform with 0% out-of-pocket expenses for optical, hearing and dental prosthesis, a reform that allows for the full reimbursement of glasses at limited prices.
But in 2020-2021, it is especially the Covid crisis with its total or partial closures of stores, which has plunged by 10 to 15% sales volumes (1.3 million pairs of glasses down) and values (- 710.2 million euros) according to the institute GfK.
