The study in brief!

32,9%

of women executives in France in April 2021 compared to 32.3% in January 2017.

53,4%

of women entrepreneurs are located in Ile-de-France, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Occitanie and PACA.

76,8%

of women managers run a sole proprietorship.

72%

of women executives have a degree between a master's and a doctorate, compared to 62% of men executives.

"According to the World Economic Forum study released in March 2021, Covid-19 has delayed the time to achieve gender equality by more than a generation. At the current rate, it would take 135.6 years to close the global gender gap in economic, political, health and education."

In France, only one in three managers is a woman

In France, in April 2021, there is one female executive (32.9%) for every two male executives (67.1%). This result, far from the parity often hoped for, is found in almost all the segments studied.

Compared to our previous study in January 2017, i.e. in four years, and despite the legal framework and the expected evolution of mentalities, this percentage has only slightly changed. Indeed, at that time, we noted respectively 32.3% of women against 67.7% of men at the head of French companies.

Women are still rare in the management of companies

In a system where political and economic powers are still largely male, where networking and co-optation are the norm, it is not surprising that women are still too often ignored in the composition of the management teams of companies, particularly commercial companies. This situation is still very real, as shown, for example, by the analysis according to the legal form of the companies.

Thus, 38.5% of sole proprietorships are headed by women, compared to 22.2% of commercial companies. The legal forms of business in which the proportion of women is highest are the artisan-merchant (61.5%), liberal professionals (51.8%) and traders (40.2%).
