At the end of 2024, French economic players are struggling to project themselves in an environment marked by reduced visibility, both economically and politically. In this climate of instability, Ellisphere notes that the number of business failures (i.e. the opening of receiverships and direct judicial liquidations) has risen by +17.4% in one year.
With 64,208 insolvencies recorded in 2024, the number of business failures in metropolitan France rose sharply. At the same time, safeguard procedures increased by 1.2%, reaching 1,461 cases over the period.
In the French overseas departments and territories (Guadeloupe, Guyana, Martinique, Mayotte, Réunion), the number of business failures reached 1,999 in 2024, an increase of 14.1%. On the other hand, the number of safeguard procedures fell sharply, by 19.8%, to just 69 over the period.
The regions most affected are Île-de-France (+28.3%), Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (+18.4%) and PACA (+15.2%). They account for more than half of all insolvencies in mainland France.
The sectors hardest hit are: Building & Civil Engineering, with 17,976 insolvencies, an increase of +26.3% since 2023; Transport & Logistics, with 2,923 insolvencies, an increase of +32%.
The automotive sector is also suffering from a sharp drop in vehicle registrations, impacting automakers and parts suppliers, with significant job losses.
The outlook for 2025 suggests an increase in the number of insolvencies, due in part to lower growth forecasts for France (+0.9% OECD).
But with political and fiscal uncertainties looming over France, not to mention the devastating effects of protectionist policies and Donald Trump's return to the White House, it's not just the French wine industry that's suffering.
